Monday with Maria
Today I was on The FOX Business Network’s Mornings with Maria panel for three hours from 6am-9am.
As you can imagine in three hours we discussed a wide range of topics We spent a brief amount of time on the markets and the positive reaction to the President’s announcement yesterday. The President announced that there was a potential treatment in the form of plasma, that was reported by the FDA commissioner that trails resulted in a 35% reduction of death. The reaction from markets was positive and were up big this morning to the tune of almost 1%.
We also previewed the Republican national convention which starts tonight. It is my view that the Republican national convention will center around positivity and the potential agenda for another four years of the Trump administration. The highlight of this was second term agenda item of creating ten million new jobs in ten months and one million new manufacturing jobs. There is also much discussion around the decoupling from China. These goals are realistic if the administration is able to incentivize and produce these million manufacturing jobs to back from China.
The next thing we discussed was one of the morning buzz topics around movie theaters Russell Crowe starred in the movie which generated over $4 million in box office gross receipts in one weekend which is four times the entire industries receipts last weekend. Great news for movies considering that both New York and California still have movie theaters close which is a large portion of the industry. I view this is a good sign that we're starting to get back to normal but we are not there yet I can't wait to get back to the movies I just don't want to see such a scary movie.
Next was the Word On Wall Street segment where we discussed the ongoing saga with TikTok. TikTok is a Chinese spyware App focused on teens and preteens and the government has a large amount of authority as it pertains to national security. TikTok is planning on suing the treasury department to block the government forced divestiture. TikTok can sue whoever the want to their hearts content but fact the matter is they are a tool of the Communist Party of China and as a result will ultimately lose.
We also discussed the backyard pool industry with the maker of pools he's currently in the process of trying to hire 400 people. They are having difficulty finding people and my question was about the enhanced unemployment. This is the first person I've actually spoke with that stated this is hindering his ability to hire talent as people are being making more to stay home. The pool industry is booming at the moment hitting all time unprecedented highs as people are fleeing cities, not traveling and improving their homes.
The second edition of morning buzz was Northeastern students being told they were expecting to be expelled if they went to parties. If I was a college I'd be taking a semester off or an entire year off because this is insanity to expect kids not to be kids. My first thought was one of the greatest songs ever by the Beastie Boys, “You Gotta fight for your right, to party!”
The second part talked about kneeling in the NFL for the anthem. This is a very difficult situation and Roger Goodell is in stuck in the middle. Goodell is the face of the 32 owners, and they are watching the NBA ratings collapse, “Go woke and go broke,” with over the top embrace from of Social Justice. The other side is you have a majority African American League with hard working young man who feel very strongly about this. Roger Goodell is literally stuck between a rock and a hard place and I gather that's why he's paid over $40 million a year so while I acknowledge the difficulty of his position don't cry for me Argentina.
The last thing we discussed is the lack of travel is making people depressed according to a new American Airlines survey. We all agreed that travel is something that we miss and we appreciate doing business in person. The best way is to see people face-to-face but that's not really a reality at the moment. It's my opinion that I November 4 a lot of these things are going to return to normal and that much of the dangers of the coronavirus are being completely politically politicized. Soon enough the dust will settle and I still believe these lockdowns and shut downs have done more damage to the economy to human life to people than the actual coronavirus itself
